How Can My Contribution Make A Difference?

City Slicker Farms serves over 4,000 participants each year, and we couldn’t do it without the investment of our donors. In celebration of 15 years, we’ll be sharing 15 projects over the next several months that you can help fund directly, once we raise the necessary funds. Check out the projects below to learn about what your donations can do.

A Garden for St Mary’s Center

St. Mary’s is a community center in West Oakland serving at-risk seniors and preschoolers through counseling, shelter, nutrition, advocacy and social support. For community centers like St. Mary’s, edible gardens can serve both as healing spaces for clients and as a source of fresh produce for incorporating into meals. Your support will help us build and install a raised bed food garden for St. Mary’s adult clients and provide two years of support including seedlings, compost, mentoring, and nutrition education resources.

Extended Youth Crew Internships

City Slicker Farms offers a paid summer employment for West Oakland teens, coupled with leadership development and skills training. Currently, the Youth Crew program provides three months of intensive agricultural training and workshops for 5 to 8 youth each summer, covering topics from carpentry and construction, to money management, to effective communication through storytelling and photography. We would love to fill this program to capacity in 2017 and fund extended fall and spring hours for youth seeking weekend employment during the school year. But our ability to do this is entirely dependent on funding.

Cold Storage for Fresh Produce

Every Saturday from February through November, we operate a sliding-scale farmstand selling fruits, veggies and eggs grown at our urban farm sites. Our farmstand program ensures that fresh produce is accessible to low-income residents, and no one is turned away for lack of funds. Thanks to the opening of the West Oakland Farm Park this summer, we expect increased harvests and even greater reach through that program. But since we don’t yet have cold storage, we lack the flexibility to harvest in advance. A cold-storage solution at the Farm Park will allow us to harvest on a more flexible schedule and keep our produce fresh for farmstand customers.

Celebrating 15 years

It's through your generosity that City Slicker Farms has accomplished so much in our 15 year tenure. We've trained thousands of residents in sustainable urban farming, built and supported nearly 400 new gardens, grown over 280,000 pounds of fresh produce, and most recently, transformed a vacant brownfield lot into a thriving community park and urban farm. Your continued support will create access to fresh produce in some of our area’s highest need communities and help build a more just local food system in the Bay Area!
